Sorry for being a day late. I didn't have the courage to do this yesterday. I'm going to copy paste what I had posted at
"So I'm going to stop making my comic The Devon Legacy. I'm always split between which hobbies I want to do. MUGEN and my comic. My comic is my bigger passion. But it's just not sustainable as a hobby that I can find enjoyment now that I have a family and less time.
When I was single and worked on it that's pretty much all I did. It was my life. I was thinking about story or writing or practicing my art or making actual pages. That's about it.
Now for almost this entire year I have been working on the comic again. Under the idea that even if it's just 1 page a week I am at least still living my hobby and progressing the story.
But the limited amount of time is making it too stressful. I worry just to meet my deadline. I am not enjoying it now as each page feels like it's work and since I'm not getting a lot of drawing practice either through making more pages or random practice sketches my art is simply not improving and the pages are feeling HARDER to make each day.
To top it off I realized that it's a futile effort at storytelling. The pace is just WAY too slow. I like drawing. But I mostly like it to bring my story to life. I consider myself a writer more than an artist. I'd rather progression be made but I want that progression to look decent too.
I have 7 "seasons" planned. Each needing about 30 issues a season. Each issue will be from 20 - 64 pages long. So to simplify, at a page a day it would take me 210 years to complete the whole story. It'd take 30 years to finish season 1.
Now to add to this: making my pages requires solitude. Or at least to be left alone. It's a very introverted process that does not bring in anyone else. So I am shutting myself away from my child and wife when I work. Which I generally try to do while she is at work and he's at daycare 2 days a week.
But still it's not an experience I can share and it leaks into their time a lot because I rarely finish a page in the time I have available for reasons already mentioned.
So for that reason I decided to hang it up. If I ever get extra money where I can hire an artist I'll come back to it. But this is it. The dream of my comic has to be laid to rest.
On a plus side though this gives me a lot more time to play games again. Something I can share with family! And to work on MUGEN. Which again I can share with my son as he gets older. To play and to learn with.
So I should become more active around here and contributing again. No more splitting my 2 selves. Comic me and MUGEN me.
Thanks for the read. Just needed to air out!"
So basically, I'm really REALLY sorry but I have to end Devon Legacy again. This time with warning at least. I do intend to finish this issue since it's been so long in the making and I'm so close. I'll just post all the pages at once when I complete it.
Once it's completed feel free to message me and I can tell you how things would turn out if you'd like to know.
I can't tell you how hard this decision is and I'm really sorry I strung many of you along. Thank you for all the comments and support. I'll continue reading many of your comics. Heck I may have more time to do so now lol
Sorry to hear that :(
Yeah, we all have priorities and let's be honest here:
Most people on CF have the comic as a hobby and also without an end in foreseeable future. Something you like to do but also something that can end when other interests or priorities pile up.
I understand it.
I am a latecomer here but still enjoyed it.
The prologue is a story of its own basically and that is finished.
I will stay subbed even after you upload those pages.
Sometimes, people rediscover their previous work and return :)
Thank you. I've been considering just writing it out in prose form with images for more important scenes just to get the story out there. But if you're like me you read comics for the visual storytelling.
I'm not much of a book reader :P
I am glad you enjoyed it. And yes. Prologue is like a finished story. I'm just sad that it's only the tip of the iceberg.
Another one? That's been happening too much lately. :(
But you gotta do what you gotta do.
Ack! I didn't mean to join some comic ending trend! D=
It seems like a few of the comics I read lately are following this route. But when other things in your life pile up, decisions have to be made. And yeah, your wife and kid come first. When it stops being fun, it's time to stop.
While the comic may be coming to an end, I really hope the story doesn't. I wouldn't totally give up on your idea, because this story and these characters are awesome. Maybe you could bring it back in another form? (Like a series of novels, or a slideshow/motion comic?)
And I feel your art HAS improved greatly, especially since the prologue.
So yes, when this issue is over, I'd like to know what would've happened next, but I also think this is an idea that should just be set aside, rather than given up on. And hopefully, maybe you can bring it back in another form that would be easier and quicker to produce? Either way, I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you! About my art, I feel it was better in Prologue. I even have my right hand skew back that I'd finally gotten read of in issue 6 for the most part. But I'm glad you find it better. It's still MUCH better than earlier issues!
And I'm considering releasing it in prose form with images for bigger scenes. Just kinda free hand write it out and make it public.
Thank you for the support!
That was sad news :( But it's a strong decision and good for you! I'll read whatever you put up for us to read :) And who knows? It might eventually be the new Attack on Titan, when you're rich ;)
I appreciate that! Though I almost hope the animation quality wouldn't be as good as Attack on Titian! It takes YEARS to make a new season lol
man in black
Of course, round it up and study them
Best of luck on all future endeavors!
I feel ya, man. I have a 7 month old daughter, and balancing time is quite the challenge! Don't be a stranger!
I'll stick around. And this issue is still going to be finished. Worked on the next page a bit this week already =)
As disappointing as it is (I won't lie about that), it's understandable. And when push comes to shove, family
take preference any time, any day of the week. So there's that.
Now as to the idea you mention of basically continuing this as a light novel...
I think that might not be a bad idea at all. Though I'd create a seperate archive for that, still on this page if possible, which is linked to from the last page of the comics you plan on doing. That way, should you find the time and motivation to continue drawing again at some point, the two could be read parallel to each other.
I actually like that idea.
Believe me, you're not the only one disappointed. I've been having my own little pity party. :P
And yes. I intend to make a separate comic for the Light Novel that's linked to from the end of this issue. I'll draw the images for it and I'll get guest artists and commission from time to time to make the images. It'll mostly be a single static image and walls of text. Not my ideal way of releasing the story but at least it's still being released.
I can only hope in the future I find a way to come back to the actual comic part and finishing the story would be an achievable goal!
Sorry to hear that, but as someone who's been there I know exactly how you feel - Punk-Pink would have taken FOREVER to finish, which is what lead me to shrink it down back when I rebooted it into RuneSpark. Right now I'm on a gag-a-day kinda thing, and if I ever go back to big.comics they'll still have shorter, more self-contained issues instead of gigantic backstory-laden epics.
The bad thing is I DID shorten the series down LOL
I can't reboot it into anything else. It's either the story I wanted to tell or nothing.
Mangled is goods.
